What Is Fetal Echocardiography?
Fetal Echocardiography is a highly specialized prenatal ultrasound examination designed to evaluate the structure, rhythm, and function of a baby’s heart while still in the womb. It provides a detailed and focused assessment of the fetal cardiovascular system.
Unlike routine obstetric ultrasounds that assess overall fetal growth and anatomy, fetal echocardiography focuses specifically on the baby’s heart. It uses high-resolution ultrasound imaging and Doppler techniques to examine the heart’s internal structure, rhythm, rate, and blood flow through chambers and vessels.
Comprehensive Cardiac Evaluation
Structural Integrity
One of the primary objectives is to evaluate the structural integrity of the heart. The scan carefully examines heart chambers (atria and ventricles), cardiac valves, and major blood vessels connected to the heart.
- Valve function assessment
- Chamber symmetry check
- Major vessel connection
Rhythm Monitoring
A normal heart rhythm is vital for effective blood circulation. Fetal echocardiography includes careful rhythm monitoring to assess fetal heart rate, regularity of cardiac beats, and electrical conduction patterns.
- Arrhythmia detection
- Beat-to-beat regularity
- Heart rate analysis
Blood Flow Analysis
Doppler ultrasound allows real-time visualization of blood flow. We evaluate the direction and speed of blood flow, valve efficiency, and overall circulation within the cardiac system.
- Doppler flow mapping
- Circulation velocity
- Pressure gradient check
Expert Interpretation Matters
At Imperial Imaging, our fetal echocardiography scans are conducted using advanced cardiac ultrasound systems and interpreted by experienced radiologists. Early identification allows for better prenatal monitoring and postnatal care planning.
