Optimal Timing
Performed strictly between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation.
Risk Assessment
Screening for Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) and other conditions.
Early Health
First major insight into early fetal anatomy and heartbeat.
Understanding the NT Scan
The Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan is a specialized prenatal ultrasound examination performed between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. This scan plays a critical role in early fetal assessment by measuring the thickness of a fluid-filled space, known as the nuchal translucency, located at the back of the baby’s neck.
During early pregnancy, a small amount of fluid normally accumulates in this area. However, an increased thickness may indicate a higher risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities or congenital conditions. The NT scan is therefore an essential first-trimester screening tool that helps doctors assess fetal health at a very early stage.
At Imperial Imaging, NT scans are performed using high-resolution ultrasound systems under expert radiologist supervision, ensuring precise measurements and reliable results. Our equipment allows for sub-millimeter accuracy, which is vital for this time-sensitive screening.
Chromosomal Screening
Increased nuchal translucency thickness has been associated with a higher risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities, including:
- Down syndrome (Trisomy 21)
- Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome)
- Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)
Important Note:
The NT scan is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. A normal measurement indicates a lower risk, while a higher measurement suggests the need for further evaluation, such as the Double Marker blood test or diagnostic procedures like NIPT.
Early Anatomy Check
Beyond chromosomal screening, the NT scan offers the first detailed look at your baby's developing anatomy:
Growth
Confirmation of gestational age.
Vitality
Verification of fetal heartbeat.
Limbs
Early development of head & limbs.
Organs
Basic abdominal wall assessment.
Critical Window
Must be performed between 11w 0d and 13w 6d for accurate results.
Safe, Non-Invasive, and Radiation-Free
The NT scan is a completely safe ultrasound examination. It uses high-frequency sound waves with no radiation exposure, posing no risk to the mother or baby.
No Radiation
No Needles
Painless
Importance of Expert Interpretation
Accurate NT measurement requires skill, experience, and high-quality imaging equipment. Even small variations in measurement can influence risk assessment. At Imperial Imaging, every NT scan is conducted by trained professionals and reviewed under strict quality protocols.
Our commitment to clinical accuracy ensures that your first-trimester screening provides the most reliable foundation for your pregnancy journey.
